Come & Sing Bach Mass in B Minor

Come & Sing Bach's B Minor Mass Information and booking details

J. S. Bach Mass in B Minor

Towards the end of his life, Bach assembled 27 movements, some of which were newly-composed, into a large-scale choral Mass setting, that has been called “the Greatest Musical Work of All Times and All People”. We will spend the day learning the notes, but also learning something about the style of singing in Bach’s day, while also touching on some of the fascinating numerical and symbolic aspects of the work. In many ways, the Mass was a compendium of all Bach’s compositional styles, from the Stile Antico of Palestrina in the ‘Credo’ and ‘Confiteor’ through to the latest galant style in ‘Domine Deus’.

There are few experiences quite as life-affirming than when one finally sings the last movement – ‘Dona nobis pacem’/Grant us Peace, where Bach uses the same music as sung earlier to the wiords ‘Gratias agimus tibi’/We give thanks to thee, thus unifying the prayer for peace and the giving of thanks to God; surely a sentiment with which all generations can empathise.
