BITE-SIZED BACH: 1* Bach died at the age of 65, thinking that his music was old fashioned and that no one would remember what he had written.* It was the likes of Mozart, Beethoven, and Mendelssohn (and they would know), who recognised Bach’s brilliance. Some 80 years after the Maestro's death, in 1829, Felix Mendelssohn helmed what came to be recognised as a historic performance of the St Matthew Passion in Berlin that reignited the world's interest in the Leipzig cantor and kapellmeister and secured his position as one Western musics greatest composers - evs.* "Bach" is German for a little stream or brook. The mighty Beethoven declared: "His name should not be Brook, it should be Ocean."* He didn't just play/write for the pipes - he had some fine pipes of his own. in 1700 Bach won a choral scholarship to St Michael’s School, in Lüneburg, because of his beautiful singing voice.Bach's B Minor Mass.
