We've got two lovely Elgar pieces coming up in our festival concert programme: I Sing the Birth and Angelus, both of which illustrate a glimpse into different periods of his life, reflecting his deep connection to his Roman Catholic faith and his ability to draw inspiration from specific places and historical texts.The first was penned in 1928, late in Elgar’s life and during a less prolific period after death of his wife and while he lived at Tiddington near Stratford-upon-Avon.Dedicated to his close friend, the Rev. Harcourt B. S. Fowler of Elmley Castle, Worcestershire, it features the words of the 16th-century poet and playwright Ben Jonson.Angelus, meanwhile emerged in 1909 at height of Elgar’s international fame after he'd been inspired his stay at a villa in Careggi, near Florence, owned by an American friend.The text is a translation of a Tuscan dialect prayer and refers to the Angelus, a Catholic devotion commemorating the Incarnation, traditionally signalled by the ringing of a church bell.This is less more pomp and circumstantial swagger and more introspective, spirituality from the great man.
