A favourite (hard to choose, we know!) in our April 5 programme is Hubert Parry's Blest Pair of Sirens. A setting of Milton's At a Solemn Musick - Parry took the more upbeat title from the first line - it was commissioned by Charles Villiers Stanford for the London Bach Choir and premiered in May, 1887. The bill's headline piece was Berlioz's spectacular Te Deum but the buzz around this much shorter premiere had been growing through rehearsals. Parry himself recalled being congratulated 'over and over again' by the singers and the then Director of the Royal College of Music, a tearful Sir George Grove, who shook his hand repeatedly. And on the night it went down a storm. Or to quote the composer himself again: was ‘quite uproariously received’. While arguably not now as widely recognised as I Was Glad and, of course, Jerusalem the anthem, scored for double choir, thrums with rich harmonies and regal fanfares. It perfectly captures the themes of celestial music, harmony and a longing to return to a state of grace and escape the disharmony prompted by sin on Earth. We won't have an orchestra but we will be accompanied by Peter Sheppard on the organ. It's a stupendous piece but don't just take our word for it - we're in right Royal good company. The Prince and Princess of Wales chose it for their 2011 wedding and brought it firmly back into the pubic consciousness (if it ever went away).
